Welcome to Family Policy Institute
Family Policy Institute Newsletter September 2008
Against the backdrop of rising global and domestic political and economic uncertainty, one thing is sure – God is sovereign and in complete control of world events. I returned from the US last Thursday where Achmed, Inge and I attended the Values Voter Summit as guests of the Washington DC based Family Research Council.
Upon my return from the US, I was greeted by the breaking news that the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) was locked in talks regarding President Thabo Mbeki’s future. It didn’t take the NEC long to reach the decision that he must go. The ANC seized upon the opportunity presented by Judge Chris Nicholson’s ruling implicating Mbeki in the NPA’s corruption investigation of Jacob Zuma and ‘recalled’ him from office.

CDA Launched with Christian Charter
The Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) was launched on Wednesday 9 July at Parliament by its alliance partners the Christian Democratic Party (CDP), Federation of Democrats (FD), New Labour Party (NLP) and The Alliance for Community Transformation (ACT).
The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) opted out of the CDA choosing to remain in their multi-party governance arrangement with the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Former Western Cape premier and city mayor and current leader of the NLP, Peter Marais said, “There are now three political alliances in South Africa, the ANC\SACP\Cosatu alliance, the liberal DA\ACDP\ID alliance and the Christian CDA”. Marais remarked that the ACDP should reconsider its alliance with the DA”. FD leader Kevin Southgate said the ACDP was approached first but declined because of their working relationship with the DA.

FPI ACTION ALERT
Comment on the Draft National Schools Pledge
The current situation in Zimbabwe is a grim reminder of how vital our vote is. The selection of just one wrong leader can destroy an entire nation.
Apathy toward our God-given responsibility to elect godly men and women of integrity into positions of leadership and authority can result in a Zimbabwe type scenario for South Africa.
The great evangelist Charles Finney said the following "The Church must take right grounds in regards to politics...the time has come for Christians to vote for honest men, and take consistent ground in politics or the Lord will curse them"
Martin Luther King said, "The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It must be the guide and the critic of the state. If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority."
Much of Family Policy Institute's work over the next nine months will focus on our upcoming General Elections. As Christians with a positive vision for our nation, we have to get it right this time! The alternative to not heeding the above warnings are to scary to contemplate!
US General, Douglas MacArthur offers this dire warning, "History fails to record a single precedent in which nations subject to moral decay have not passed into political and economic decline. There has been either a spiritual awakening to overcome the moral lapse, or a progressive deterioration leading to ultimate national disaster".
